It’s here again: Varsity 2017!

After 26 years undefeated by Coventry University, can we beat them again this year?

Varsity is, for many, the absolute highlight of the academic year, attracting thousands of spectators to watch 35 fixtures over 4 intense and exciting days of sport. Including sports such as golf, tennis and cricket, Varsity has something for everyone to enjoy and will certainly get you feeling competitive against our neighbouring Coventry University.

This year it will be taking place between 16th-26th February (conluding with the Rugby Union finale on the 26th) and tickets are already available! Lots of the events are totally free to attend, making them available for everyone to attend as many times as they want. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the stress of all your academic work – and even society commitments – but Varsity is the perfect opportunity to take a break from uni life and have fun with your friends without spending any money; what could be better?

Last year we managed to beat Coventry by 10 points, let’s do even better this year! Even if you don’t particularly follow a sport or a team, Varsity is great to get involved with as it gets everyone together and creates a huge sense of community within the university.

Although I’m not a sporty person myself, I do love watching it and getting involved with the morale when watching the games. This year I really want to watch some of the womens’ games; I used to attend an all girls school and so this is a great way to revisit my school years and get involved with the all-female games! The womens’ netball (24th Feb) and badminton (22nd Feb) matches are the ones I am most looking forward to as I used to enjoy playing these myself at school; it’s going to be such a thrill to see firsthand such a high level of sportsmanship.

If you’re still not convinced, check out the Varsity website and explore the previous fixtures and media coverage to get you in the mood for some friendly competition!
