Health and Medical science is a new course unique to Warwick. Because of this I thought it would be useful for any prospective HMS students out there to give a breakdown on how we are taught on this incredibly unique course.

In the HMS you will have three types of in person teaching.

  1. Pre-recorded lectures: This may change as we come out of COVID, but as of now most of the content we learn in the HMS is from pre recorded lectures. These lectures are incredibly content heavy and because of this, they take a long time to go through. The average lecture is roughly between 45 minutes to an hour but it may take longer to go through them if you want to take notes. Going through lectures is what I spend most of my time doing as if you don’t dedicate a substantial amount of time to go through the content covered in these lectures it is easy to fall behind.
  • Group Discussions: Unlike pre- recoded lectures, group discussions are done live with roughly 14 other members of your course. These discussions are led by professors who will introduce you to new ideas and then provide topics for discussion based on said ideas. These sessions are highly interactive and focus more on teaching different perspectives and giving you a more in-depth understanding of certain topics.
  • Case Based Learning: Cased based learning teaching sessions are led by you. In these sessions you’ll be given as case scenario, and in groups of 8- 10 you will discuss different factors and issues relating to the case. Similarly to Group Discussions, these sessions are incredibly interactive. The case will usually be based on the content you are covering at the time, thus giving you a chance to see the real-world application of the content you are learning.  (If you want to learn more about these sessions, I have written another article about them)

Additionally, to this, the HMS also involves a substantial amount of self- teaching. This is done using TEL.

  • TELs are online workbooks that contain content for us to cover ourselves. These workbooks will contain chunks of content followed by small activities such as labelling diagrams and multiple-choice questions for you to complete. Similarly to lectures the content covered in TELs can be incredibly heavy and therefore they can take a lot of time to go through. However, what I like most about TELs is that they can be done at your own pace and taking notes from these workbooks is a lot easier than taking notes from a lecture.

Overall, teaching in the HMS is unique. Every week you will have a variety of different types of learning to take part in which in my opinion makes the course even more enjoyable.
