Quotes to remember at University
I remember reading Hillary Clinton’s memoir “What Happened” in my first year of University. Every chapter started with a quote. When I finished the book I wrote out my favourites and stuck them around my room. I did the same for other years, after a tough third year I remember defiantly finding quotes online, writing them onto A4 paper in felt tip pen and pinning them to my bedroom wall.
I have found some quotes which speak to me after my time at university – my top four sentiments I want you to remember as you start or continue your university experience. If you like these, pin them up and remember them.
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” -Dr. Seuss
You’ve arrived at one of the best universities in the UK – the world is your oyster. There is so much to discover at Warwick: your course, societies, career options, the list goes on. University is an experience you will only have once, it’s exciting! Grab it with both hands and get stuck in, attend events and socials, and discover what you enjoy.
It is also important to not feel overwhelmed, university does go fast but you have at least 3 years here. That is more than enough time to discover what you enjoy. The most important thing is to be authentic to yourself and do what you enjoy, not what you think you enjoy.
“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” -Thomas A. Edison
University is going to be an academic challenge, that means you need to persevere with your assignments and coursework. There will be times when you may feel like giving up, but keep going! There were a lot of times during my course where I felt like coursework was difficult but usually I was pleasantly surprised with my results. University is all about being stretched: do some further reading, make the use of all resources and stay resilient.
“Of all the liars in the world, sometimes the worst are our own fears.”- Rudyard Kipling
I felt a little apprehensive about joining societies and immersing myself within university. It can be a little scary to meet new people but don’t let your fears narrate your university experience. The investment I made in first year, getting to know people and societies, is still repaying me now.
“We’re so busy watching out for what’s just ahead of us that we don’t take time to enjoy where we are.” – Bill Watterson
I remember in Sixth Form a friend saying University is just as long as Year 7-9, it goes quickly! At university you will certainly spend some time thinking about what’s next to come. You may attend events thinking about your career and next step, but remember to enjoy the present.
When it comes to working, waking up for a 9am lecture will be a luxury, as will be the socially accepted mid-week night outs. Enjoy being a student, university will be academic but make time for fun and enjoy your time. At university you’ll be surrounded by so many likeminded young people – make the most of it and enjoy!
