Places to eat, in and around Coventry (October 2020)

This month, I have eaten out more than I have done since the pandemic began (…due to the fact that I have had no kitchen since 2 October, due to a kitchen renovation!). It’s been nice to get out a bit more, however short-lived it has been. So, out of the different places that I have been to, these are my pick of places to eat out, for this month (…and probably before Thursday now!)…

Hickory Smokehouse, Burton Green – if you enjoy barbecue style food, then this is the place for you. The Hickory Smokehouses are a small group of restaurants that specialise in southern USA food and hospitality. In their own words, they’re “fanatical about flames; silly about smokers and utterly obsessed with the smells, tastes and traditions of the Deep South”. This month I visited the Hickory Smokehouse, in Burton Green, for my husband’s birthday. I have to say, I was really looking forward to it, and it didn’t disappoint! We decided to go all-out and share the ‘Smokehouse Platter’, which is a complete meat-fest!! From chicken wings, to sausages, to ribs, brisket, and so on. Surprisingly, we did manage to finish the whole platter, between us (…well, there may have been a few chips leftover!). They also offer a reasonable selection of cocktails (and can make more traditional cocktails, to order) and have some nice options on the children’s menu. So, if you’re a meat lover and enjoy the taste of southern USA food, this is a good place to try.

Mocha Lounge, Coventry – located in Allesley, this is a small family run coffee shop. They offer a selection of homemade cakes, a variety of sandwiches, afternoon tea, a nice children’s menu, and lots more. Definitely worth popping along, even if it’s just for a slice of delicious cake and a coffee. I enjoy the paninis, and I’m usually partial to a nice slice of cake! Hogan’s Bar & Bistro, Coventry – Hogan’s is a small(ish) restaurant, in Keresley, situated in the John Reay Golf Centre. Currently, the restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday. I’ve eaten at Hogan’s many times, but this month was my first visit since the pandemic started. We decided to go for breakfast. The service was great, the restaurant had all of the necessary precautions in place to help keep their customers safe, and the breakfast was tasty and plentiful – including toast, tea or coffee and orange juice!
