New Year’s Resolutions – 6 months later…
Everyone really thought 2020 was going to be their year. Who knows, maybe it still can be. But the other day I was thinking about what I’ll be doing for the rest of the year, then I remembered I had a whole list of resolutions for 2020 that I hadn’t looked at since January. So, since this year has been insanely unexpected, I thought I would review a few of my resolutions & see what’s changed.
(1) Do well in 1st year & choose my options for 2nd year
So obviously I really wanted to focus on my studies & do well in my exams. Now, thanks to everything that’s going on, exams were cancelled, my first year mark is based on 2 modules instead of 5 & I have optional assessments online to make up the qualifying part of my degree. Although the exam season is very different, I was happy with my grades for MELS and Legal Theory & I’m still working hard for the optional assessments. Also, I chose my modules for 2nd year & I’m waiting to hear back about which ones I’m doing!
(2) Say Yes to more opportunities
This was a big one for me, I really wanted 2020 to be the year that I say yes to everything exciting even if it’s scary! I started off strong, advocating for the ONE campaign in the Houses of Parliament & applying to various temp jobs / volunteering roles that I found. But then Spring Break started & lockdowns began so now I’m back in Dubai, mostly at my house & not really saying yes to much. I had to cancel one of my summer plans of teaching Psychology at a Summer School in Denmark & so far, I haven’t really replaced it with much! But I’m hoping to turn this one around once I get back to the UK even if it is with more remote opportunities.
Another resolution that didn’t age well… I was hoping to do some travel this year, home to Dubai in Spring Break, Denmark to work & visit family, and then maybe a long weekend trips in the UK / Europe. Obviously now travel is off the table & I was never planning on staying in Dubai for the whole of summer but here I am! I’m hoping to go to Abu Dhabi for a few days since the lockdown in the UAE has mostly ended!
(4) Save Money
I wanted to do some work alongside uni & save up money over the year for travelling or other opportunities & this is probably the only resolution I’ve actually met. Staying home all day & back with my family means I’m spending less money & I’ve still managed to do some remote work which has been different but fun!
Although these weren’t all of my New Years Resolutions, I think it’s safe to say that 2020 was not at all like any of us expected. Here’s hoping we come out of this feeling happy & accomplished, even if it’s in ways we couldn’t have imagined in January!
