Hi everyone, today I thought I’ll write a post giving an insight into my day as a Degree apprentice. My days can vary depending on the department or the project I am placed on but currently, I am based as a Site engineer full time on site. When I am on site I live away from home in a hotel which is what I am currently doing. I will give an insight into how that works with my work and studies.

I start my day by grabbing a coffee and driving to the site at 06:45 AM which takes around 15 minutes, once on site I change into my PPE (personal protective equipment) and go to the daily morning briefings (morning briefings are conducted on-site to inform about the day’s plans, risks on that day and any other announcements). After the briefing, I go to my site office and start my day.

I talk to the works manager and the site operatives about the work plans for the day for which I issue all of the required instruction sheets to the operatives, I then instruct the sub-contracted setting-out engineer with all the requirements for the day. I generally have a small meeting with the project manager (PM) discussing all the tasks that need to be completed, we also discuss my workload and plans. I then carry out all paperwork and analyse data from the previous day, this gets checked by the PM and is issued to the client. If there are any new off-the-job learning opportunities I discuss this with the PM and spend some time getting the training (I try to get a good amount of off-the-job training where possible). I also carry out testing on-site, checking all our treatment has worked and produce graphs; I do some design work using AutoCAD and attend any other site meetings. I finish my day around 18:00, I get changed again and drive back to the hotel. On my way, I try to grab some healthy dinner (I must say, it is hard to be healthy when on-site).

Once I get back, I have my dinner and try to watch Simpsons for half an hour ( I need my daily dose of Simpsons to survive). I then go onto do my university work, assignments and revisions. I also try to get some of my ICE attributes completed. I spend around 2-3 hours a night doing all this. Finally, I go to bed and read a book or watch a show, then I sleep and repeat the same!

My days seem quite standard at the moment but as I said before it varies a lot depending on my placement within the company. I hope this gave a form of insight into my day as a Degree Apprentice on site.

Take care!

Sabrina
