An extensive university checklist

Hey everyone!

Before starting my packing last year; I made a fairly extensive checklist of everything you should bring to university, which I’ve copied below. Do remember; you may be able to buy some of this upon arriving; at the Rootes grocery store or Tesco, which might be a good idea so you can wait to see what you’ll need (I saved some of the kitchen stuff till I got here to see how much cooking I actually intend on doing…)

Good luck with packing!

All the formal stuff

  • Bag for your laundry and grocery shopping – I used the big bags from Sports Direct which I recommend (You may want to consider a bag with wheels)
  • A Santander train card or Natwest coach card? – I didn’t purchase either since I didn’t go home often enough for it to be worth it; but if you are intending on doing so, it may be worth considering
  • If you haven’t already; it would be useful to set up a dropbox (or an alternative) account, so you can save all your work there, and access it anywhere (useful backup and you can then access your work on other devices)
  • Passport – I needed this during the first week when registering for my student blogging job via Unitemps
  • Driving license (As ID…)
  • Oyster card? – If you don’t have a contactless card, and have an oyster it would be worth taking in case you go back home or travel to London for a day
  • Your enrollment letter (should receive this a few weeks before your start date)
  • Student finance details (either electronically or the letter you received, worth keeping so you can check you have received the correct amount)
  • Offer letter
  • Enrollment letter
  • Set of 4 passport photos (You may not need it, but no harm in taking just in case)
  • Bank account details – register for online/mobile banking if not already
  • National Insurance number
  • A level exam certificates (may be needed for interviews etc)

Electrical stuff

  • Laptop/phone & charger
  • Desk lamp
  • Headphone/speakers?
  • USB? – I took a USB stick which I used throughout my A-levels, but didn’t use it during my first year. Note: You will probably get a USB during freshers week (more than one in fact…)
  • Printer

Academic stuff

  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Highlighters
  • A4 writing paper
  • Folders
  • Calculator
  • Books
  • Pencil case
  • Rough book/post-it notes? (Came in handy for making regular to-do lists)

Kitchen stuff

  • Recipe book?
  • Wok
  • Saucepan
  • Knife
  • Fork
  • Spoon
  • Scissors
  • Tong
  • Glass
  • Mug
  • Plate
  • Bowl
  • Kettle
  • Baking Tray
  • Toaster
  • Pizza cutter
  • Grater
  • Peeler
  • Garlic crusher
  • Chopping board
  • Fairy liquid/sponge

(Note: I didn’t use most of this, so I would only buy all of this if you know you will be making use of it, otherwise I would wait)

Bedroom stuff

  • Bedsheets; duvet cover, pillowcase
  • Duvet and pillow
  • Mattress protector?
  • Alarm clock?
  • Laundry basket
  • door stop
  • Spare glasses
  • Mini first aid kit (Can get this from most shops; Wilko, boots, etc, or buy the relevant items individually)

Bathroom

  • Towel
  • Febreeze
  • Toothbrush/paste
  • Shampoo / Conditioner
  • Shower gel
  • Toilet roll
  • Makeup

  • Socks
  • Trainers / Flats / Heels
  • Jacket
  • Coat
  • Cardigan
  • Robe
  • Hairbands
  • Watch
  • Retainers
  • Hairbrush
  • Clutch bag
  • Hair straightener
  • Hairdryer
  • Hangers
  • Purse
  • Scarf
  • Flip flops

Extra stuff

  • Extension lead
  • blue tack / any room decor (photos, posters)
  • Thermal mug

Notes:

  • You don’t have to empty your entire home bedroom to uni
  • You would be okay with just bringing the essentials and buying anything else on campus/Tesco/online
  • Don’t stress about packing – it can seem nerve-wracking but honestly, once you get here, you’ll realise there was nothing to be worried about

Happy packing!

Shanita 🙂 xo
