Activities to look forward to on campus

If you found out you’re going to Warwick earlier this week, congratulations! It’s been a tough year, but you did it!

Personally, I’m about to start my third year, which has come up a lot faster than I ever imagined it would. Yet when I think forward to the coming year, it’s the non-academic activities that I’m looking forward to most, the majority of which just weren’t possible last year.

So, if you’re an incoming fresher or heading into your second year, I thought this would be a good opportunity to talk about some of the things that I loved doing in my first year that I’m hoping might come back this year. Hopefully it’ll give a flavour of what non-lockdown campus life looks like.

Society socials

I only managed to go to one in-person social last year, and it was right at the end of term 3 – meaning that I didn’t meet the freshers until they’d nearly finished first year! Social secs made a huge effort to make online socials fun, and I did enjoy them, but online socials just aren’t the same as in-person ones. I’m really hoping to be able to go to some in-person society socials this year.

Dirty Duck pub quiz

In first year, I always looked forward to Thursday nights. Why? Because the pub quiz was on.

My team never got anywhere near winning, but I loved it. My flatmates weren’t really clubbers, but everyone was up for going to the Duck, getting drinks and chips, and having a go at the quiz (if you haven’t been, the music round is the best round).

This was one of the things I missed most last year, and I really hope it makes a comeback this year.

Student Cinema

The student cinema is absolutely fantastic – when I was in first year, it cost a few pounds to get into the film of the evening. I saw so many films there, from Mean Girls to Pulp Fiction, though I have a horrible feeling that the last film I saw before lockdown may have been Cats.

As far as I remember, there was a film on most days, and I went at least once a week. They showed recent and nostalgic films, and I’ve been looking forward to it reopening for months. When it does re-open, I’ll be straight there.

So that’s what I’m looking forward to (hopefully) doing on campus this year. I hope it’s brought the virtual campus tours to life for you! Even if these things don’t all happen, I’m sure there’ll be lots of things happening to get involved in!
