A sneak peek for CDCS starters :)
As a full-time course representative, I have recently been invited to attend the induction day for the April intake for Career Development and Coaching Studies (CDCS), contributing to the recruitment of a part-time course representative. While observing this fun lot ask so many queries, I kept reminiscing the feeling of the unknown back when I attended my own induction day in October. Which is when I asked myself, “what would I have liked to have known about the course before starting?”. And then it hit me: how about some insight and tips on module topics from an experienced student? Which made me think, what better way than to hop on this wonderful community platform and write these thoughts down for anyone interested?
SO, please do read on for my personal synthesis of my experience during the CDCS core modules:
- Career Development Theories: my initial exposure to career work… and may I repeat the same feeling as in my first blog post about it – YIKES! However, if I may repeat myself: “something that was a relief and motivating is how the assignment looked more into our original application of the career theories. Structuring and performing our own interview data regarding individuals to be analyzed career-wise created an IKEA effect to it all; being able to relate to the essay just made it even more exhilarating when completing it, and at the same time caring more about the effort put into it“. And this has proven true with most assignments so far. But more specifically, I can assure that having a good understanding of this module will be of a great advantage as you progress in the course – basically, it will become your best friend in learning. EVERYTHING IS RELATED TO THEORY! So my advice is make sure you get good grips with it (and not necessarily from the first take).
- Career Coaching and Counselling: it is safe to say that till this day, the particular module is one of the most practical ones I have attended (not that the others were not! For any beloved tutor reading this 😀 ). It really pushed me to practice… well my career practice. It provided me with a comprehensive understanding of essential skills and tools, to which encouraged each of us to adopting them as our own during our (for some, first-ever) coaching sessions! I think what I would advise future students is to take advantage of the amount of time given to trial-and-test with a few volunteers to find what suits your personalized approach best, as well as before eventually reflecting a more experienced view of your learning in the assignment. As one of our module tutors used to say, it really is like that cheesy saying, ‘practice makes perfect’.
- Research in Professional Practice: at this point, I was just starting to get to grips with careers work. And then the university hit us with the deeply theoretical aspects of performing our own research. As an individual who has not prepared a proposal or dissertation before, I can assure you that I was at a loss for words from day one. The most highlighting aspect of it all is this: WHAT ARE ALL THESE TERMINOLOGIES. So my tip? Allow yourself time to absorb all that nitty-gritty of research work, to give you a clear direction of what is required when performing your own. In such a way, you might be able to achieve a hit-two-birds-with-one-stone situation; a research proposal (being part of the assignment) that is also done and ready in time for my dissertation. In my case, this saved me time from needing to draft another proposal with dissertation period just around the corner after our last module deadline (still, wish me luck…).
